In a difficult Hammer Throw final hampered by several no-throws, Romanian Bianca Perie threw her name in the record books of the World Youth Championships on Saturday.

On her second throw, Perie threw the hammer 64.61 metres to establish a new Championship Record in the event, betting the previous best of 63.94 Poland's Kamila Skolimowska threw at the inaugural Championships, in Bydgoszcz in 1999.

The 17-year-old also became the second repeat winner, having secured the gold in the same event in Marrakesh, Morocco two years ago with a 62.27m effort.

Starting the Championships as the overwhelming favourite, Perie, who had the top 13 throws of 67.24, 66.54, 66.00m, 65.46m, 65.24m, 64.61m, 64.50m, 64.30m, 63.88m, 63.40m, 63.27m, 62.19m, 62.19 (twice), could only beat herself.

And when Cuban Yuliet Hernandez, who was the second best in the world at 62.05m, failed to get off a legal throw in three attempts, Perie could not find a challenger.

Perie, who had only two legal throws, 62.45m to add to her winning effort, defeated Andriana Papdopoulou-Fatala of Greece (56.32) and Slovenia's Barbara Spiler (55.97m).
