Despite her second place finish in heat three and second overall in the 800m heptathlon event, home girl Katerina Cachova's World Youth leading performance handed Czech Republic its first gold medal.

Though she was outclassed in the final of the seven-event discipline by Helga Thorsteinsdottir of Iceland (2: 17.72), Cachova's personal best effort of 2:20.54 seconds in the 800m event was good enough for 816 points.

Leading by 22 points going into the event, a good performance was required from Cachova and she did deliver her best what it matters most for her country's second ever gold medal at these Championships.

In the 800m, though she could not keep up the pace with a Thorsteinsdottir, who ran the first lap in 1:04.43 and crossed the 600m mark in 1:41.02, Cachova ran a tactically race for second place.

In the other events, contested over two days, Cachova took second in the 100m Hurdles (13.99), won the Long Jump ( 1.78m), fifth in the 200m (25.36), third in the Long Jump (5.84m), eighth in the javelin (39.33m), 10th in the Shot Put (10.81m).

Thorsteinsdottir, who had the fastest time in the 800m, finished fifth overall in the heptathlon with 5405 points, while German pair of Carolin Schafer (5544 points) and Elisa-Sophie Dobel (5494) finished second and third respectively in the event, which saw the top 11 athletes doing personal best.
