Greene and Dragila nominated for the 2002 Laureus Awards

25 March 2002 - New York – Sprinter Maurice Greene and pole vaulter Stacy Dragila have been nominated for the World Sportsman and World Sportswoman of the year award respectively.

Three time 100m world champion and world record holder Greene has been nominated along with cyclist Lance Armstrong, golfer Tiger Woods, Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher and Australian swim sensation Ian Thorpe.

In the women’s competition, Dragila’s opponent are tennis players Jennifer Capriati and Venus Williams Swedish golfer Annika Sorenstam and Dutch swimmer Inge de Bruijn.

Nominees were chosen by the 42 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy including Edwin Moses, Sebastian Coe, Kip Keino, Nawal El Moutawakel and Daley Thompson.

It was  also announced at the New York Athletic Club that 400 metres track legend Michael Johnson, who won five Olympic titles and nine world championship gold medals during his illustrious career, had been unanimously voted on to the Laureus World Sports Academy as its 43rd member.

The eventual winners of the 2002 Laureus World Sports Awards, as voted upon by the Laureus World Sports Academy, will be unveiled during a television ceremony staged in the regal surrounds of Monaco's Grimaldi Forum, under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert of Monaco, on the night of May 14.
