Groundbreaking Ceremony for Athletics Promotion Centre

Dignitaries assemble to witness the groundbreaking ceremony for the Athletics Promotion Centre in Daegu, Korea (© IAAF.org)

A grandious ceremony was held to break ground for the Athletics Promotion Centre (APC), a state-of-the-art training centre that guarantees Daegu’s bulging reputation as a ‘Mecca for Korean Athletics’.

Facilities: Athletics Academy, 5000 seating capacity in indoor stadium, 6 x 200m Lanes, Lodging for up to 100 athletes, Doping Control Room, etc.

The Local Organizing Committee of Daegu 2011 made good on its promise to construct the APC, which was proposed during the bidding of the 2011 IAAF World Championships.  Daegu won the bid to host the 13th edition of the IAAF World Championships, which will be held on 27 August to 4 September 2011.

The APC is expected to be completed by the end of 2011 and will be one of the key legacies of the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011.  It will house the Athletics Academy and an indoor stadium with six 200m lanes; conducive for the training of elite Korean athletes.
 
Dignitaries at the groundbreaking ceremony included Bum-Il Kim, mayor of Daegu Metropolitan City; Jong-Geun Park, chairman of the National Assembly’s ‘Special Committee to Support International Competitions’; Rocky Park, IAAF Council Member and LOC Honorary President; Hae-Nyoung Cho, LOC Co-President; and Dong-Hoo Moon, LOC Vice President & Secretary General.

“The Athletics Promotion Centre is a legacy of athletics, for athletics,” exclaimed Mayor Kim, who echoed the general wish of witnessing the Korean national flag flying high at the medal ceremonies.

IAAF Council Member Rocky Park added, “I sincerely hope that the whole of Korea will show its passion for athletics and extend its full support to the LOC, who are working tirelessly to stage the best IAAF World Championships to date.”
