For the second year in succession, Poland’s Anita Wlodarczyk won the women’s IAAF Hammer Throw Challenge, while Krisztian Pars beat last year’s winner Pawel Fajdek in the men’s contest.

Wlodarczyk ended her Hammer Throw Challenge campaign in the best way possible, by setting a world record at the IAAF World Challenge meeting in Berlin.

With metres equating to points in the challenge and world records being worth an extra point, her 79.58m throw in the German capital brought her season tally to 232.52. Earlier in the year the Pole had won in Szekesfehervar with 75.53m and placed second in Ostrava with 76.41m.

Heidler, whose world record Wlodarczyk broke, was one of two Germans in the top three in the final standings. Her score of 228.54 was enough to finish almost six points ahead of compatriot Kathrin Klaas.

Last year, Pars and Fajdek were separated by just 0.06 in the final standings as world champion Fajdek took the spoils. But this year Hungary’s Olympic champion got his revenge, winning by more than three points.

With each athlete’s three best marks in the series counting towards the final scores, Pars threw beyond 80 metres in each of his scoring competitions. He threw 81.57m in Ostrava, beating Fajdek, and again finished ahead of his arch-rival in Szekesfehervar with a winning distance of 82.49m.

Although Fajdek won in Rieti, throwing 81.11m to Pars’ 80.78m, the latter had already done enough to win the Hammer Throw Challenge.

It was the third year in succession that Pars and Fajdek had filled the top two spots, with Pars regaining his title from 2012. Tajikistan’s Dilshod Nazarov finished third, just 0.08 behind Fajdek, while African record-holder Mostafa Al-Gamel was further back in fourth.

Since the series began in 2010, the winning score in the men’s contest has improved with each year. That trend continued in 2014 with Pars’ tally of 244.84 being the best ever.

The winners of the IAAF Hammer Throw Challenge will each receive US $30,000 with prize money being awarded for the top 12 finishers.
