Haryana reign supreme in Indian inter-zonal junior meet

As many as six meet records have been bettered in the 19th edition of the All-India inter-zonal junior athletic championships which concluded on Thursday (11 Oct) evening at the Acharya Nagarjuna University campus in Guntur.

Athletes from the state of Haryana dominated the three day meet.  Rinku Sangwan led the champions with a “double” in girls’ under-18 age-group, capped with a meet record 42.90m in discus throw.  Her team-mate Akash Antil also re-wrote the record in the same event for boys hurling the Discus to 54.55m.

The above meet added significance as it served as ‘selection trials’ for those wishing to make the national team to the inaugural South Asian junior championships to be held at Colombo, Sri Lanka, in November 29-30.

The ‘southern stars’ from Kerala and Tamil Nadu had to face stiff challenge from athletes from Bengal.   Bengal’s Milan Ali sailed over a creditable height of 1.92m in boys’ U16 age-group.  Their athletes almost had a clean sweep of titles in the middle distance events among girls, with the international Jhuma Khatoon took junior women’s crown in 1500m in a time of 4:35.7.

Noteworthy performances were delivered by Kerala boys Jithin Paul (400h) and P.K. Anoop (Long jump) as well as Tamil Nadu girls G. Gayathri and R. Kowsalya (in hurdles).
