USA’s World Indoor champion Reese Hoffa produced his twelfth consecutive 21m competition of the year thanks to another massive effort to win the Area Permit meeting in Cork, Ireland, yesterday (Sat 30).

Hoffa’s 21.47m winning put on his penultimate attempt was the highlight of the 56th Cork City Sports meeting. The 29-year-old who has a personal best outdoors of 21.96 (22.11m indoors) from when coming second at the 2006 US champs, was in Cork having recently won this year’s US title meet (21.47m – 23 June), and having taken a 21.77 victory at the IAAF World Athletics Tour meeting in Ostrava, midweek (27 June). The World Indoor champion’s series yesterday was 20.95, X, X, 20.90, 21.47, X.

Olympic silver medallist Nadine Kleinert of Germany won the women’s contest with a put of 18.80m.

Jamaica’s James Beckford, continued his fine vein of form this summer with a 8.09m win in the men’s Long Jump but the assisting wind was a very strong 5.4m/s! Grace Upshaw secured the women’s Long Jump with 6.58m (+1.5). Also in the blustery conditions there were High Jump victories for Amy Acuff (1.92) and Jamie Nieto (2.25),

In a slightly illegal assisting wind of 2.1m/s, Laverne Jones of the US Virgin Islands triumphed in the women’s 200m in 22.67 seconds. She also ran to third in the 100m in 11.23 behind USA’s Brianna Glenn’s 11.17 victory (+2.4m/s). Ireland’s Paul Hession with a very fast aiding wind snared first in the men’s 200m (20.43, +4.7), while USA’s DaBryan Blanton in slightly less advantageous conditions (+2.3) was successful in the 100m in 10.14.

Britain’s Sarah Claxton won the women’s 100m Hurdles in 13.04 (+0.3) beating among others Ireland’s World Indoor 60m Hurdles champion Derval O’Rourke, who was third (13.13).

Finally of note, there was also a fast men’s 3000m. African 10,000m champion Moses Kipsiro of Uganda held on to the race in 7:47.03 beating Kenya’s World Junior silver medallist Joseph Ebuya who clocked 7:47.11.
