Hordge and Carter honored as the 2001 USA Youth Athletic Championships Wrap Up in Decatur

8 July 2001 - Decatur - The top U.S. youth athletes finished up competition at the 2001 USA Youth Athletics National Championships in Decatur, Ill. For 53 U.S. athletes, this meet served as a final preparation for the 2001 IAAF World Youth Championships taking place in Debrecen, Hungary, July 12-15, while others worked to gain national age division titles. The top eight finishers in each final were named to the Verizon All-American Team.

Members of Team USA continued their winning ways in Decatur. Willie Hordge, named the Verizon Outstanding Male Athlete of the Meet, won his second title of the meet with a 10.51 in the 100m. Hordge, competing for Track Houston, won the 200m title on Friday in 21.04 seconds. The Verizon Outstanding Female Athlete of the Meet, Michelle Carter, also recorded an impressive double this weekend, winning both the intermediate discus and shot put. Carter capped off her weekend with a national age division record in the shot put on Saturday, tossing the shot 14.99 meters/49 feet, 02.25 inches, breaking the record by nearly three feet. On Friday, Carter won the discus with a throw of 43.73m. Both athletes will represent Team USA at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, July 12-15.

Other World Team members that were in action on Saturday included Stephanie Smith, competing unattached, who won two events on Saturday, the intermediate girls 100m (11.85) and the girls 400m (53.41). Latoya LaGree (City of Atlanta) won the young women's triple jump (12.39m), her second title of the meet. LaGree won the young women's long jump (5.93m) on Friday.

In exhibition hammer throw competitions, Michael Freeman and Kristen Michalski, both competing unattached, won in preparation for Hungary. Freeman, who threw 56.33m, won by nearly 40 feet, while Michalski (51.97m), won by near 60 feet. Competing for Team Idaho, Donovan  Kilmartin won the young men's pole vault (4.75m), edging out fellow World Team member Trey Bell (Carolina Extreme T&F). Michael Grant (New Horizon), won the intermediate boys 100m (10.95), while his club teammate Reggie Witherspoon won the 400m in 48.08.

Adam Perkins (Brocaw Blazers) won the young men's 1500m in 3:55.60, while Dexter Faulk, competing for Velocity Track Club, won the young men's 110m hurdles in 14:00. In the young women's discus, Amarachi Ukabam (unattached) won with a throw of 45.30m/148-07.

In the bantam division, Daquan Hargrett (Metro-Dade Track Club) won the 100m in 13.80. Brittany McCord (Miami N.W. Express) won the 100m in 14.01, while also winning the 400m with a time of 1:00.61. Roshawn Broadnax, competing for the Martin L. King Blasters, won the 400m with a time of 1:03.77. Michele Martuccu (Metro-Dade Track Club) won the 1500m in 5:15.83. Brooke Sharpton (Miami N.W. Express) won the 1500m in 5:16.59.

In the midget division, Patrick Blackie (Franklin) won the boy's 100m in 12.33. Latianna Hall (There to Care) won the girl's 100m in 12.89. Taiwan Jones of Acorn/Oscar Bailey Track Club won the boy's 400m with a time of 58.13. Ebony Collins (Quiet Fire) won the girl's 400m in 58.39, after winning the 200m on Friday. Rafael Klien-Cloud won the 1500m in 4:50.34, while his sister Avery Klien-Cloud (won the girl's 1500m with a time of 5:03.98. Daniel Marshall set a new record in the boy's mini javelin throw, the first year the event has taken place, with a throw of 26.33m/86-05. Leigh Petranoff (unattached) threw 30.22m/99-02 to set a record in winning the girl's mini javelin throw. In the 80m hurdles, Adam Dailey (Wahoo Track Club) won the boys race in 13.25, while Micaela Wimberly (Miami N.W. Express) won the girls race in 12.87.

In the youth division, Eddie Rush (unattached) won the boys 100m (11.42), while Elizabeth Olear (Valley United) won the girls 100m (12.35). In the boys 100m hurdles, Cody Skidmore (Track Houston) won in 14.11, while Mark Holmes (Mobile Parks & Recreation) won the 200m hurdles (26.52). Bever-leigh Holloway won two titles on Saturday, competing unattached, won the 100m hurdles (14.70) and the 200m hurdles (28.57). Leotist Gordon (Eastside Steppers) and Amber West (Glory Track Club) won the 400m in 51.68 and 56.74 respectively. Also from the Eastside Steppers, Larry Hill won the 1500m (4:27.08), while Kara Anderson (Acorn/Oscar Bailey TC) won a tight race against Bridget Ballard, edging her out by just three-tenths of a second (4.47.786). In the boys and girls triple jump, Daryl Pryor, competing for Miami N.W. Express, won with a mark of 11.47m, while Danay Spencer (Run 4 Glory) won with a mark of 10.91m.

In the intermediate division, Scott Clayman, competing unattached, won the exhibition boys hammer throw (33.53m/110-00) by nearly 30 feet. William McCann (Decatur Staley Striders) won the boys 1500m (4:06.02), while Trisa Nickoley (Topeka Spirit) won the girls 1500m (4:51.80). Ashlee Brown, competing for Quiet Fire, won the girls 400m hurdles (1:02.68), while Delandous O'Neal (Carrollton) won the boys 400m hurdles (55.39). In the 100m hurdles, Candice Davis (Ann Arbor Youth TC) won in 13.85, while New Horizon's Aries Merritt won the boys 110m hurdles (14.92).

In the young women's division, Janae Young, competing for Northwest Select TC, won the 100m (12:07). Arthur Davis and Tracee Thomas won national titles in the young men's and women's 400m dash. Davis, competing for Mobile Parks & Recreation, won in 48.14, while Thomas, competing for West Valley Eagles, won in 54.32. Bershawn Jackson and Tiffany Ross, both competing for Miami N.W. Express, dominated in the 400m hurdles, winning in 51.71 and 59.45 respectively. In the young men's triple jump, Mobile Parks & Recreation's Janon Busby won with a jump of 15.16m/49-9. Brianna McLeod (Jenks America) won the young women's 1500m (4:34.89) while Tiffany Ross (Miami N.W. Express) won the young women's 100m hurdles (13.71).
