Fresh from winning two bronze medals for Kenya in the Eastern Africa junior championship in Uganda last week, Hosea Macharinyang returned home to be crowned the North Rift 10,000 metres champion.

Running for Marakwet district, Macharinyang clocked 29:14.4 to beat a newcomer Jackson Rono of Keiyo district who was timed at 29:15.4 during the provincial championship held at Kipchoge Keino stadium, Eldoret, Kenya on Saturday.

Macharinyang won bronze medals in both 5000 metres and 10,000 metres in the Uganda championship.

A younger brother of former 5000 metres World champion Richard Limo, Andrew Limo who represented Keiyo was third in 29:22.0.

The championship saw the return of former World Cross Country junior champion Lydia Cheromei who finished sixth in the women 5000 metres. She clocked 16:45.4 in the race that was won by veteran Jepkorir Aiyabei (Uasin Gishu) in 16:10.4. Agnes Barsosio of Keiyo was second in 16:21.2 while the third place went to Pamela Lisoreng of Marakwet in 16:25.8.

In the 10,000 metres for women, schoolgirl Elizabeth Rumokal rediscovered her winning ways after last week’s poor show during the Rift Valley high schools championships at the same venue. Running for Marakwet district, she won the North Rift title in 33:52.1.

Second position went to Doris Chengeywo of Keiyo in 33:59.7 while the third spot went to Penina Limakori of Marakwet in 35:17.7. Marathoner Eunice Oruaro running for Keiyo was forth in 35:30.2.

The men’s 5000 metres was very competitive with David Limo of West Pokot emerging the winner in 14:06.7. John Chepsiyo of Marakwet was second in 14:18.8 and losing to Limo in the last lap sprint.

The winners will represent the region in the national championship set for Nairobi later this month.

Chemeli Kipchoge of Uasin Gishu won 800 metres for women in 2:11.9 beating Caroline Chepkwony of North Nandi to second place. Her time was 2:12.0.

The men 800 metres was won by Job Tanui of N/Nandi in 1:49.4 while the second position went to Elias Koech of Keiyo in 1:50.6.

Willy Komen of Marakwet won the 3000 metres steeplechase in 8:54.3. Elly Cherono of Uasin Gishu and Kemboi Katui of Keiyo were second and third respectively in 8:55.1 and 8:57.6.
