IAAF Council changes competition regulations: invites current World Champions, host country athletes to Athens

P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">Monte CarloMONACOThe IAAF Council was requested, by postal vote, to make some amendments to the procedures for entries to the World Outdoor Championships.

Subsequently, the Council decided the following:

The host country of the World Championships may enter one athlete in each event, regardless of entry standard;

In addition to the maximum of three athletes per event, the IAAF shall invite current World Outdoor Champions to compete in the next World Championships;

The athletes selected under this rule shall compete in the same event(s) in which they are current world champions. These athletes may also compete in any other event(s) to which they have been entered by their National Federation in accordance with the traditional entry requirements;

The Federations of the athletes selected under this rule will receive additional quotas accordingly;

These changes will have full effect at the World Championships in Athens, 1-10 August 1997.
