IAAF strongly rejects Acosta remarks

Monte Carlo, Monaco -  29 July 1998- The IAAF wishes to express its strong disappointment with the International Volleyball President Ruben Acosta's "counter-attack" against the IAAF President's recent appeal for a uniformed approach by the world sporting movement against doping.

In fact, contrary to Mr. Acosta's statement that FIVB "was the first International Federation to join the convention..., even accepting the International Court of Arbitration for Sport", the IAAF wishes to confirm that the first, original agreement between the International Federations concerning the creation of the court for doping matters from the meeting on January 12/13, 1994 does not include the signature of FIVB.

As a result, the IAAF categorically and adamantly rejects Mr. Acosta's statements which only serve to cast grave doubt on the veracity and good faith of Mr. Acosta's own intentions.

The IAAF regrets to see that a problem as critical as doping is reduced to a question of useless, personal polemics through comments and insinuations which contravene every concept of reasonable relations between sports administrators.

Differently from beliefs professed by certain sporting bodies, the IAAF wishes to reiterate its firm position that doping is a problem for all sports and that only through a unified, constructive approach can this phenomenon be faced seriously, effectively and ethically for the health and well-being of all sportsmen and women.
