Kipketer, Bubka, Ottey and Diagana to teach youngsters in Monaco

 

Monaco, Monte Carlo - 9 February 1998 - 32 promising young athletes from around the world will be invited to Monaco’s Stade Louis II this spring for the lesson of a lifetime. Four of the world’s best athletes - Sergey Bubka, Stephane Diagana, Wilson Kipketer and Merlene Ottey - have agreed to take part in the IAF Zepter Masterclass on March 14 and 15. They will pass on some of their priceless knowledge and experience to a hand-picked group of youngsters aged between 17 and 19. Among the planned activities are: video presentations and lectures, a question and answer session and practical training sessions. The young athletes will also be invited to take part in the Larvotto Cross Country race in Monaco, which will take place on March 15.

The initiative, which was originally suggested by IAF Honorary President SAS Prince Albert of Monaco, is supported by the Monegasque Athletic Federation and Zepter, a company specialising in stainless steel household products. Zepter are already heavily involved in athletics as title sponsors of the Zepter Herculis Grand Prix Meeting, part of the IAAF Golden League in 1998, and the Zepter Indoor 1998 Athletic Meeting in Tampere, Finland.

Eight Member Federations of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF), with strong traditions and results in the specialist events of the Champion athletes, have been invited to propose a young specialist for the IAF Zepter Master Class. Athletes from each of the IAAF’s Six Area Groups will be represented. The young athletes will be divided by country and disciplines as follows:

Pole Vault (Sergey Bubka): Australia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Ukraine.

Hurdles (Stephane Diagana): Belarus, Bulgaria, Cuba, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Qatar, Slovenia.

Middle distances (Wilson Kipketer): Bahrain, China, Denmark, Spain, Kenya, Morocco, Romania, Switzerland.

Sprints (Merlene Ottey): Barbados, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Greece, Jamaica, Nigeria, USA.
