Impressive doubling highlights inaugural USA Youth indoor champs

Hillsdale, Illinois, USATaking home a triple victory, Rebekah Topham was the headline act at the inaugural USA Youth Indoor Championships which were held in Hillsdale, Illinois over the weekend (12-13).

Competitions were held across seven divisions. As participation at this summer's IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France, 6-10 July is limited to athletes born in 1994 and 1995, here is a summary of the action in the Intermediate (born 1995-1996), Young Men/Women (born 1993-1994), and High School (born 1993-1996) divisions. David Oliver, the 2008 Olympic Bronze medallist and the inaugural Samsung Diamond Trophy winner in the 110m Hurdles, was on hand to present awards and sign autographs at the championships.

Middle & long distances -

Topham opened the weekend in impressive fashion, first taking the girls 3000m Intermediate title by a 14-second margin to take home her first national crown in 10:27.12 on Saturday. She quickly followed up with another victory, clocking 2:24.76 for the Intermediate division win in the 800m.

She came back on Sunday to take the 1500m title in 4:55.22 to end her weekend undefeated.

In the boys 1500m Intermediate division, Glenn Lostritto unleashed his finishing kick with 100m to go to edge out Roy Hayes at the line and claim the national title in 4:23.22. Jordan Swate brought home the win in the Young Men’s race in a winning time of 4:41.18.

In Friday's 3,000m race Wyatt Uresti who won the Intermediate Boy’s race in 9:47 and David Ryland for the Young Men in 9:32.60. Joseph Codrington of the Ann Arbor Track Club won the 800m Intermediate division in 2:08.47, and Sidgie Green clocked the fastest time of the day by winning the Young Men’s race in 2:04.13.

Sprints & hurdles -

In the 55m, Bryon Vaughn of the Cambridge Jets won the Intermediate race in 6.89. In the fastest race of the day, Martin Tolentino won the Young Men’s title in 6.59. On the girls side, Nia Dorner won the Intermediate division in 7.27 and Devanae Mitchell of the Northwest Track Club claimed the Young Women’s title in 7.32.

In the 200m races the Young Women's title went to Cori Lemere in 25.71 while the Young Men's went to Kelso Griffin in 23.91.

The 400m titles went to Phillip Hayes in the Intermediate division in 53.75 while Ray Austin won the Young Men’s race in 53.76. In the girls 400m races, Shamier Little won the Intermediate race in 1:01.18. Briana Quinnoes finished first in the Young Women’s race to win in 1:03.56.

After a false start in the Intermediate Girls race, Shamier Little ran to the 55m Hurdles win in 8.39. Kasha McDougald and Tierra Williams ran a close race in the Young Women’s hurdles, but McDougald was able break the tape first in 8.65 to win the national title. In the boy’s hurdles, Scott Filip won the Intermediate title in 8.27. In the Young Men’s race, JaShawn Combs earned the national title in 7.63.

Jumps & throws -

Deena Gibbs jumped to the lead on her second attempt in the Intermediate Girls’ Long Jump and protected her position with a leap of 4.53m on her third attempt to win the national crown. Scott Filip followed up his win in the hurdles with a winning jump of 6.47m in the Intermediate Boy’s long jump. Kasha McDougald twice recorded a jump of 5.34m to win the Young Women’s competition, and Zachery Ziemek won the Young Men’s Long Jump in 6.83m/22-05.00.

In the High Jump Filip also earned his second title of the day on Sunday with his win by nearly a foot in the Intermediate competition with a mark of 1.85m. Kevin Spejcher had an outstanding day in the Young Men’s High Jump as he bettered his seed mark five times with a final clearance of 2.00m.

In the Young Women’s pole vault, Anna Tessiatore soared over 3.25m while her teammate Savannah Emmrich took the runner-up spot with a clearance of 3.10m. Bonnie Draxler won the national title for the Intermediate Girls’ division by clearing 3.20m/10-06.00.

In the triple jump, the following athletes hopped, skipped and jumped to national titles: Kasha McDougald, Young Women, 11.27m/36-11.75; Scott Filip, Intermediate Boys, 13.11m/43-00.25; Zachery Ziemek, Young Men, 14.06m/46-01.50.

In the Young Men’s Shot Put, twins Jeremy and Jermaine Kline reversed their seed order, with Jeremy recording the furthest throw of the day, 19.29m, followed closely by his brother Jermaine with 19.20m in the runner-up spot. Ellery Lassiter won the Intermediate Boy’s competition with a throw of 11.97m. In the girls’ Shot Put, Tia Jones won the Intermediate division with a 10.94m effort, and Adesola Ibitayo won the Yong Women’s division with a heave of 10.24m.
