Chennai, IndiaFor the 30year old Indian High Jumper Bobby Aloysius the achievement of attaining the qualifying standard for the Olympic Games have finally become reality when she sailed over 1.91m at the National (Inter-State) Championships yesterday.

National record

Aloysius’ mark not only improved her national and meet mark of 1.90m that she achieved two years ago at Bangalore, but also equalled the B standard for the Athens Olympics.

An elated Bobby thanked the hundreds of enthusiastic supporters who were present on Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for their stupendous support which encourage her to go over the height.

"I thank everyone who helped me to make it", said Aloysius, who confirmed that her journalist husband Shajjan Scaria asked her to do her best but not to get disappointed if things went wrong, before she started to make her bid today.  However, Bobby took full advantage of the opportunity and the day turned out to be hers.

Men’s Shot – just short of qualification

The men's events however could not produce any noteworthy marks except in the shot put circle which saw the athletes fell short of the “A” qualifying norm by a few centimetres.  The 20-year old South Asian Games winner Ranvijay Singh was the victor tossing the iron ball to a personal best of 20.26m on his sixth try which however was some 4 cms short of the required A standard.

Veteran performer Shakti Singh (PB 20.60m – 2000) could manage only 19.47m today for a third place finish.

The lone Olympic qualifier in this event is Bahadur Singh Sagoo (20.40m at Kiev on 22 May), who is already in Ukraine for a final training camp before the Olympics.

In the long jump pit, national record-holder Amritpal Singh (8.08m) finished a poor sixth at 7.49m to prove that he has yet to recover fully from his injuries.  The event was eventually won by the Bengal athlete Sanjay Kumar Rai with 7.84m, while another South Asian Games winner Maha Singh finished fifth at 7.59m

Delhi athletes Piyush Kumar and Poonam Tomar have re-established their supremacy in the sprint events by respectively winning the men’s and women’s 100m races.

The hosts Tamil Nadu have something to cheer when their women athletes S.Shanthi (1500m) and N.Latha (Shot Put) garnered gold medals.
