Triple Olympic champion Marion Jones plans to start her outdoor season with a race over 200 metres on Sunday (18 April) instead of her usual 400m.

She will compete in a 200 at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in Walnut, California.

"I just felt the need to work on speed," Jones said. "I'm coming back from a year off. I have a need to work on my speed so I am going to run a 200 metres."

On the track, Jones said her start should be improved, giving her more opportunity to take advantage of her speed and strength.

"The biggest difference will be in the long jump," Jones said. "In terms of the running, if it's not too much broke, don't tweak too much."

Jones said being a mother had helped her sort out her priorities.

"In the past, athletics dominated my life," she said. "I thought about it 24 hours a day. Looking back, that was unhealthy. Now, when I leave the track, I don't really think about it until the next day when I go to practice."

"It allows me to keep the zest for the excitement for the sport every single day. I don't get burned out now because athletics doesn't run my life."
