The Kenyan Amateur Athletic Association has chosen a provisional 100-strong squad but delayed naming definitive teams for the forthcoming 1999 IAAF World Championships and All African Games.

The three Kenyans who won gold medals at the 1997 World Championships in Athens - Daniel Komen (men's 5000 metres), Wilson Boit Kipketer (men's 3000 metres steeplechase) and Sally Barsosio (women's 10,000 metres) - have been invited to defend their titles in Seville next month by the IAAF.

Tegla Loroupe, twice New York marathon champion and holder of the world's best time for the women's marathon, is among the 100 from whom the squads for Seville and September's All African Games in Johannesburg will be chosen.

Others are five-time world cross-country champion Paul Tergat, World Cross-Country short-course title-holder Benjamin Limo and 3,000 metres steeplechase world record-holder Bernard Barmasai.

Also listed are former World Cross-Country Junior Champion Philip Mosima and Japheth Kimutai and Noah Ngeny, respectively the fastest men this season at 800 and 1500 metres.

Kenya's athletics chiefs decided against naming definitive teams when the national championships ended at the weekend in Nairobi.

"We shall continue to monitor performances in the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) Grand Prix before naming our final team on August 3," Kenya Athletic Association secretary-general David Okeyo told reporters.
