Kenyans clinch IAAF cross country double
Reuters
4 February 2001 - Vilamoura, Portugal - Kenya's Patrick Ivuti won the Almond Blossom IAAF cross-country race on Sunday
when he beat compatriot Bernard Barmasai in a final sprint.
Ivuti was in command throughout the 10 km test. By the end of the third lap only Barmasai could stay with him.
Ivuti put in a spurt on the home straight to finish in 29 minutes 33 seconds, a second ahead of Barmasai.
Ukrainian Sergei Lebed was third in 29:59 so the European challenge prize remained undecided until the next round of the
series in Italy in March.
Fifth-placed Portuguese Paulo Guerra would have clinched the title had he won.
Guerra heads the European challenge with 91 points to Lebev's 80.
Kenyan Lydia Cheromei controlled the six kilometre women's race from the start and won in 19:48. Romania's Elena Fidatov
was second in 19:58.
Absent Briton Paula Radcliffe leads the women's European challenge on 100 points from Belgium's Anja Smolders with 71.
