Kerala retains overall Indian Junior Championships title

Hosts Kerala won the overall team title for the eighth consecutive time by winning 30 gold, 21 bronze and 24 medals in the 19th National Junior Athletic Championships which concluded at Lal Bahadur Stadium on 23 December 2003.

Kerala which has produced a number of international athletes like long jumpers T.C. Yohannan (Asian Games gold medallist in Tehran 1974), Anju Bobby George (bronze medalist in 2003 Paris World Championships), hurdlers P.T. Usha, M.D. Valsamma, middle distance stars Shiny Wilson and K.M. Beenamol (semi-finalists in the Olympic Games and World Championships respectively) successfully conducted the above junior meet showing skill and simplicity.

Kerala’s C.T. Raji and Dhanya Purushothaman came out with sterling performances by winning both 100m sprint and Hurdles races in their respective age groups. If nurtured properly they will certainly bring laurels at the global level to their mother nation.

Pritam Bind of Uttaranchal and Pinki Pramanik of Bengal (represented India at the World Youth Championship at Sherbrooke) won three individual gold medals.
