Kenyan Evelyn Kimwei's upset win in the 10,000m over Kayoko Fukushi of Japan was the highlight of the annual women's distance meeting in Kobe, Japan on Saturday (15 October).

Running in warm and rainy conditions, Kimwei broke from Fukushi, the national record holder at 3000 and 5000m, just before reaching the halfway point en route to a 31:42.51 win, more than 20 seconds ahead of Kukushi's 32:05.60. Earlier this year, Kimwei, who turned just 18 in August, ran a personal best of 15:14.15 for 5000m this season, while Fukushi had a 31:03.75 to her credit this year.

In the fifth of five 5000m races, a pair of Kenyans, Evelyn Wambui (15:06.74) and Ongori Phyles (15:24.91) were the fastest of the day.
