The hamstring injury Carolina Klüft sustained on Monday (6) during the Long Jump at a meet in Karlskrona (southeastern Sweden) unfortunately turned out to be so serious that an operation will be needed.

During a thorough examination on Wednesday (8) it was established that she had had a complete rupture of the left hamstring. Specialist Carl Askling who analysed the MRI scan pictures said that he only once before in his long practice had seen such a major hamstring pull:

“Probably it was her slipping somewhat on the board during that take-off which caused the stress on the muscle to become so extraordinary strong that the muscle completely disconnected from the bone at the buttock.”

Now the plans are for renowned sports physician Leif Swärd to within a few days perform an operation to re-connect the hamstring muscle, and after that there will be a period of at least half a year before Klüft will be able to resume training.

Of course Klüft was very saddened by the severe nature of the injury but immediately vowed to return to competitive athletics:

“I will be back, no doubt about it!”
