Just a few days before the start of the 35th edition of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa (24 March 2007), the President of the IAAF, Lamine Diack, visited the Presidential Palace of the Honorable Mwai Kibaki in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, and presented him with an IAAF Honorary Plaque.

The Kenyan President expressed his strong support for the biggest international sports event ever to held in his country, and told Diack that he was expecting an extremely good showing from Kenyan athletes, who will be competing for the first time in front of a home crowd, in a competition that they have dominated for more than 20 years.

Diack was accompanied to the Palace by Kenya’s Minister of Sport Maina Kamanda, the Chairman of Athletics Kenya, Isaiah Kiplagat, and the IAAF General Secretary Pierre Weiss.

On the way back to Mombasa, the delegation took the opportunity to stop off at the Nyayo National Stadium, whose refurbishment, with a brand new Mondo track, has just been completed with the support of the IAAF. The facility has been granted the prestigious IAAF Class 2 Athletic Facility Certificate, meeting all necessary requirements for international competitions.

While he was at Nyayo, President Diack took the opportunity to chat with World and Olympic 10,000m finalist John Cheruiyot Korir, and David Kitur, a World Championships 400m finalist in 1987, who is now coaching a group of young hopefuls.
