Lopes-Schliep named Canada's Athlete of the Year

Priscilla LopesSchliep, the silver medallist at this World championships, was named Canada's Outstanding Athlete of the Year for 2009, Athletics Canada announced.

Lopes-Schliep, who also race to bronze at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, also received trophies for Outstanding Athlete of the Year in Track Events and for Single Outstanding Performance of the Year. Lopes-Schliep, 27, clocked 12.54 to finish runner-up at Berlin's Olympic stadium, and later capped her season with a career best 12.49 at the Memorial Van Damme in Brussels and finished fourth at the World Athletics Final in Thessaloniki.

Other award winners included marathoner Reid Coolsaet, who was named Outstanding Athlete of the Year in Off-Track Events; Derek Drouin, the Pan American Junior Championships gold medallist in the High Jump (2.27m), was named Outstanding Junior Athlete of the Year; and Aaron Brown, the silver medallist in the 100m at the World Youth Championships, was named Outstanding Youth Athlete of the Year.
