Brunssum, The NetherlandsLornah Kiplagat who has been nursing an Achilles injury in recent weeks, yesterday (Sunday 28 March) won the Parellloop (Pearl Run) in the southern Dutch town of Brunssum in 14:47, beating Briton Paula Radliffe’s unofficial world best time for the 5km on the road (14:51; 2003).

It is of course the second time in a matter of weeks that the Kenyan born Dutchwomen has upstaged Radcliffe, who is the World record holder for the women’s Marathon. On Sunday 29 February, in a head to head confrontation with Radcliffe in windy conditions in Puerto Rico Kiplagat had beaten her over 10km in a time of 30:41 to Radcliffe’s 30:45.

Speaking about her run in Brunssum yesterday, Kiplagat commented –

“I'm very happy with this time because I was in bed for most of the time during the last four days,” said Kiplagat. “My physiotherapist, who is currently treating me two times per day, said it was not a big problem to race to day.''

Dutch marathon champion Luc Krotwaar, who will run the Rotterdam marathon next Sunday, was the main pace maker for Kiplagat in the race which was essentially a solo-time trial given that the second placed runner finished in a time of 18:26!

The men’s 10km was more of a race, as in an all Kenyan affair former double World short course Cross Country champion John Kibowen won in 27:59 from 2 Wilson Kigen (28:11) and Peter Kiprotich (28.24).
