On a cold, still evening Lornah Kiplagat ran the fifth fastest 10,000 metres on the track in 2003 with a 31:14.28 clocking, yesterday (20 June).
The 29 year-old Kenyan women, who is awaiting Dutch citizenship, ran in a special four women race in a local meet.
With a temperature of 12C, and nearly no wind, Kiplagat was paced by compatriot Jane Kiptoo until 6000 metres.
Peter Langerhorst, husband and manager of Kiplagat, said: "Lornah wanted to run sub 31:45 to make sure she is qualified for the World Championships at Paris. Everything went well and I had to hold her back sometimes.''
After a first kilometre in 3.07, Kiplagat ran consistent laps between 76 and 74 seconds. She passed 3000 metres in 9.26 and halfway in 15:44. The last two laps were respectively 72 and 71 seconds.
Collette Sagan, who trained with Kiplagat at her training centre at Iten in Kenya, finished second in a personal best of 33:32.87. Hilde Kibet in third clocked 34:12.20 also a personal best.
Langerhorst expects that his wife will get her Dutch passport in a very short time.
