Reigning world and Olympic shot put champion Astrid Kumbernuss (GER), has announced that she will not be competing further this season, as she is expecting a child in July.
Kumbernuss has totally dominated the women's shot put circuit since 1995, when she won her first world champion's title, following this up in 1996 with the Olympic title in the event and in 1997 by successfully defending her world champion title and winning the overall IAAF women's Grand Prix and the IAAF Grand Prix Final.

The 28-year old made her last appearance in Germany for the German national indoor championships in Sindelfingen and will not be competing again until the 1999 winter season.
