13 December 1999 - London  - World 100 and 200 metres champion Maurice Greene will open his Olympic campaign at the Birmingham indoor grand prix on February 20.
The American, who was in London to receive the BBC award for overseas sports personality of the year, reduced the world 100 metres record to 9.79 seconds this year before becoming the first man to complete the world sprint double in Seville, Spain, last August.
Greene told a news conference on Monday he was restricting his indoor season next year and had not committed himself to any meeting other than the Birmingham event.
He also predicted he could further reduce his world record next year.
"My coach thinks I can run 9.60," he said. "For myself I think I can run 9.76." Greene said he believed he could also break his world indoor 60 metres mark of 6.39 set last year.
"I believe I can run 6.37 or 6.36," he said.
