Maurice Greene to run in Milan

Maurice Greene will be the uncontested star attraction of the Milan Permit Meeting, which will take place on 9 June in the Arena Civica of Milan.

1997 world champion Greene has been chasing Donovan Bailey’s world record since he moved to California to train with John Smith back in 1996. Just a few days ago in Eugene, Oregon, Greene clocked 9.84, a time which would have equalled the world record but was run in windy conditions. Greene could well produce another great time on the worldwide renowned fast track of Milan.

Greene who will land in Milan on Monday morning is only one of the world class athletes who will compete in Milan.

The meeting was presented by President of the Italian Federation, Gianni Gola who said:

''Together with Rome’s Golden Gala, which is part of the IAAF Golden League, the ‘Notturna di Milano’ is the greatest athletics event scheduled in Italy. Curiously, Milan will host the best sprint athletes of the moment while Rome will welcome the most famous middle distance runners."

The middle distance events will nevertheless be very interesting in Milan as well with the presence of 1500m world record holder Hicham El Guerrouj who despite being practically unbeatable on the distance will have to keep an eye on Italian 1993 800m world silver medallist Giuseppe D’Urso.

The 5000m will offer an interesting African duel between Moroccan Salah Hissou and Kenyan Daniel Komen with Italian Gennaro Di Napoli, back to competition after suffering from a micro fracture in the foot as outsider.

The local crowd will support some of the top Italian stars of the track headed by Fiona May (long jump), Fabrizio Mori (400m hurdles) and Manuela Levorato (100m/200m).
