Today Britain’s Ian Stewart celebrates his 60th birthday. The long-time meeting director for the UK’s televised athletics meetings which include the IAAF World Athletics Tour Super Grand Prix in London, has also recently taken on the role of overseeing Britain’s current distance running prospects.

Another World Athletics Tour meeting director also celebrating his 60th this year - on 18 March - is Jean-Pierre Schoebel, who is in charge of the Herculis meeting, Monaco’s Super Grand Prix fixture.

Ian Stewart MBE., might be an ‘official’ nowadays but most will also know him as the gutsy distance runner who among his many track feats over 5000m became European champion in 1969, Commonwealth Games winner in 1970, and Olympic bronze medallist in 1972. He also won two 3000m titles at the European indoors (1969 and 1975).

With the 37th IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Amman, Jordan (28 March) on the near horizon it is also well worth remembering that Stewart was the 1975 World champion at this event too. The World Cross is the oldest of the IAAF’s World Athletics Series events having been taken under the control of the world governing body for the sport in 1973.

The World Cross Country champion from 1973, Finland’s Pekka Päivärinta also celebrates his 60th birthday this year, and there is a long list of other World and Olympic champions (individual events) also celebrating very important decades in 2009:
