Round 1 summary

Nearly all the favourites progressed without incident from the first round. World Indoor record holder Frank Fredericks – running in lane 4 – was perhaps the most impressive, running 20.84 almost effortlessly, but Japan’s Koji Ito was also inspired by the occasion, clocking a Japanese and Asian record of 20.76 – the fastest time of the morning. The only surprise was the elimination of a former world champion, Britain’s John Regis. National records were set by the following qualifiers: Holland’s Patrick Van Balkom (20.94), New Zealand’s Chris Donaldson (21.01), Mexico’s Juan Pedro Toledo (21.02) and Argentina’s Carlos Gats.
