Mens 200m heats
Round 1 summary
Nearly all the favourites progressed without incident from the first round. World Indoor record holder Frank Fredericks running in lane 4 was perhaps the most impressive, running 20.84 almost effortlessly, but Japans Koji Ito was also inspired by the occasion, clocking a Japanese and Asian record of 20.76 the fastest time of the morning. The only surprise was the elimination of a former world champion, Britains John Regis. National records were set by the following qualifiers: Hollands Patrick Van Balkom (20.94), New Zealands Chris Donaldson (21.01), Mexicos Juan Pedro Toledo (21.02) and Argentinas Carlos Gats.
