Sydney champion Anier García led a talentladen semifinal with 7.49, as he pulled fast times out of Latvia’s Stanislav Olijar (7.50, his second such time today) and Liu Xiang of China (7.54).

Seeming almost as relaxed as he had been in the heats earlier, three-time World Champion Allen Johnson of the US was in the front-running phalanx over the final hurdle, but faded noticeably in the run-in, finishing with a fourth-place 7.57, which nonetheless moved him forward to the final.

In the first section, soon-to-retire Colin Jackson of the United Kingdom won both the decibel contest in crowd noise as well as the semifinal itself, clocking 7.55.  Finishing behind Jackson in a cluster were Sweden’s Robert Kronberg (7.64), French decathlete Ladji Doucouré (7.67), and Commonwealth champion Shaun Bownes of South Africa (7.68).
