| Greece's Costas Gatsioudis made the longest throw achieved in both groups, with 87,97. The Finn Matti Narhi was second in group B, behind the Greek, with 85,05. In group A the world record holder Jan Zelezny (CZE) was the only thrower to achieve the qualification standard of 83,50. He threw 84,31. The great surprise of this group was the non-qualification of the defending world champion Marius Corbett (RSA). He came to Sevilla with a '99 performance of 87,17 but threw 76,34 and was very far from the qualification. Only three athletes made the standard. Among the other nine quealifiers one should remark the Briton Steve Backley, current European champion, who threw 81,68, the Germans Boris Henry (83,35) and Raymond Hecht (83,41), and the Finns Aki Parviainen (82,84) and Harri Haatainen (81,83). |

El griego Kostas Gatsioudis fue el que realizo el
lanzamiento mas largo en el conjunto de los grupos A y B, con una marca de 87,97. El
finlandes Matti Narhi fue segundo en el grupo B, detras del griego, con un lanzamiento de
85.05. En el grupo A solo el plusmarquista mundial, el checo Jan Zelezny realizo la marca
requerida para pasar a la final, que era 83.50. Zelezny lanzo 84.31. En este grupo la gran
sorpresa la protagonizo el actual campeon del mundo, el sudafricano Marius Corbett. El
campeon de Atenas, que se presento en Sevilla con una marca de 87.17 estuvo muy por debajo
de su nivel y con un lanzamiento de solo 76,34 estuvo lejos de pasar a la final. Solo tres
atletas consiguieron clasificarse automaticamente, por lo que tuvieron que ser repescados
nueve lanzadores mas, entre los que se encuentran el britanico Steve Backley (81.68),
subcampeon en Atenas y campeon de Europa, los alemanes Boris Henry (83.35) y Raymond Hecht
(83.41) y otros dos finlandeses, Aki Parviainen (82.84) y Harri Haatainen (81.83).   |
