Men Pole Vault Final

FacebookTwitterEmail

Argentina is not a nation often associated with pole vault success but German Chiaravaglio changed all that with an imperious performance to win with a clearance of 5.15m.

Chiaravaglio, whose father is the national team coach, failed at his first attempt of the competition at 4.60m but was successful at his next five vaults and after clearing 5.15m at his second attempt secured gold.

The minor medallists were elated after both recording personal bests. Russia’s Dmitriy Starodubtsev cleared 5.10m and Britain’s Steven Lewis 5.05m to both pick up precious metal.

But this was more IAAF World Youth Championship joy for South America after Brazilian Julio Cesar De Oliveria and Andres Silva of Uruguay won the men’s javelin and men’s octathlon respectively yesterday.

The world leader Konstadinos Filippidis of Greece failed at 5.05 and then twice at 5.10m.

The competition had been delayed for 30 minutes after the vaulters refused to jump into a strong wind and they switched to vault in the opposite direction.
