Championship favourite Dennis Fernandez of Cuba needed only one jump of 15.37m to comfortably clear the automatic qualification standard of 15.20m in pool B of the triple jump.
Fernandez, who boasts a best of 16.08m, will be the man to beat in tomorrow night’s final as on paper he is more than half a metre ahead of the rest of the field.
The best qualifier was world number two Mohamad A Darwish of the United Arab Emirates with 15.39m – but he needed three jumps to better the automatic qualification standard.
The only other automatic qualifier was Uzbekistan’s Taras Moiseenko who improved upon his personal best by 12 centimetres with a third round leap of 15.31m.
