Running without newly crowned World Record holder Tim Montgomery, the USA 4x100m victory today proved just how many sprint talents the United States have.
A team composed of Jon Drummond, Jason Smoots, Kaaron Conwright and Coby Miller was a clear winner of today’s sprint relay and set a new Championships Record of 37.95.
Veteran Jon Drummond who ran the first leg for the World Record setting American team in Stuttgart 1993 was still at his best today and got off with the best start of the field. The first and second exchange for Team USA approached perfection and by the time the baton was in Coby Miller’s hands no one was able to catch up with him.
Finishing second was an amazing team of the Americas incredibly featuring four men from different countries. Cuba’s Freddy Mayola, a specialist of leg one, passed on the baton to Saint Kitts and Nevis’ Kim Collins. Jamaica’s Chris Williams ran the final bend and the Bahamas’ Dominic Demeritte anchored the team to second place in 38.82.
Namibia’s sprint legend, Frank Fredericks, who will return to the track tomorrow for the individual 200m, ran a superb anchor leg and offered the African team a well deserved third place.
