Men's 4x400m

FacebookTwitterEmail

Midway through the second leg, Africa and the Americas were battling for the lead, with the United States team an unaccustomed 20 metres back in third place.

The U.S. third leg, LaShawn Merritt, winner of the individual 400 on Saturday, clawed back half of the U.S deficit with a 44.2 leg, but anchor runner Darold Williamson was still the  same 10 meters back with half a lap to go. Then, almost centimetre by centimetre, Williamson began to gain. He caught Africa's anchor, Malik Louahla, with 30 metres to go, and the Americas' anchor, Alleyne Francique of Grenada, in “quite literally“ the last step, Out leaning him to win 3:00.11 to 3:00.14, with Lokuahla a few metres back in 3:00.88.
