A top class event saw successive world leading junior marks set first by the winning Great Britain team in heat 1, with 3:06.52 and then by an impressive US team who sped to 3:05.28 in heat 2, chased hard all the way by Japan, who came home in 3:06.72, a season’s best.

Other impressive outfits included the Brazilians, who set a new South American record of 3:06.55 to finish second in heat 1, and the South Africans who sped home in 3:06.29 to win heat 3 ahead of Australia (3:07.41).

With two from each heat qualifying automatically for the final, the fastest losers were Germany with 3:08.50 to finish 3rd in heat 1, and Poland who ran 3:07.55 to finish third in heat 3. Croatia ran a new national junior record of 3:10.04, as did Turkey (3:12.66) and Puerto Rico (3:12.18).
