Despite a spirited run that gave Selahattin Cobanoglu a new National Junior Record, the young Turk was unable to hold off the assault of Qatar’s Majed Saeed Sultan and Kenya’s Alfred Kirwa Yego and had to settle for the bronze medal.

Cobanoglu made all the running in this race, pulling into the lead as the group broke lanes and holding the lead through 400 metres, in 53.09, keeping the pace up and accelerating as the pack went down the back straight and the followers started to up the pressure and close on the leader.

Coming out of the final bend and into the home straight it looked for a moment as though the plucky Turk might make it, but Sultan kicked and pulled out followed by Yego, with the pair drawing alongside Cobanoglu with 20 metres to go before leaving him on their heels as Sultan crossed the line in a PB of 1:47.33, with Yego also running a new PB of 1:47.39 for silver and Cobanoglu setting the new Turkish Junior Record of 1:47.71 for the bronze medal.
