A new Ottawa Marathon course record of 2:09:33 was set on Sunday by Japan's Arata Fujiwara. The previous best finishing time in the marathon was 2:10:35 set by David Cheriuyot in 2007.

The Ottawa Marathon is an IAAF Silver Label Road Race.

Under cloudy skies and a cool day, the first woman to cross the finish line in a time of 2:28:19 was Merima Mohammed of Ethiopia. She joins fellow Ethiopians Lelisa Desisa and Dire Tune who finished first on Saturday in the 10K men’s and women’s categories with times of 28:08 and 32:11 respectively.

“Once again the Ottawa Marathon has raised the bar for distance runners by lowering speed times on our race course,” said Jim Robinson, General Manager of Run Ottawa. “In addition to the record set today, we broke last year’s registration record of 36,694 with 38,788 runners competing in the seven Ottawa Race Weekend events.”

First Canadians to cross the finish line were Kitchener, Ontario native Stephen Drew and Krista DuChene of Brantford, Ontario, who posted times of 2:21:46 and 2:39:07 respectively.
