Men's Heptathlon Shot Put

FacebookTwitterEmail

Bryan Clay (USA) won his third straight event from the start of Heptathlon setting a personal best 16.21m in the Shot Put and strengthened his lead after four events. Clay almost reached his outdoor PB of 16.25m from the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki, and is now leading with 2849 total points.

Roman Sebrle (CZE), the bronze medallist at the 2006 edition of the World Indoor Championships, threw a season’s best 16.16m which was enough to send him up to second place in the competition with 2647 points. But the Czech has been struggling in day two events this season and is not likely to keep a medal position tomorrow if he can’t better his Pole Vault season’s best 4.60m considerably.

Andres Raja (EST) set a personal best 14.86m and is in third place with 2596 points, but will be overtaken later in the competition by Dmitriy Karpov (KAZ) who is in fourth place after three events with 2564 points after a 16.19m shot put effort which was just 4cm shy of his personal best indoors. Co-world leader Karpov is going up and will fight for a medal here.

Andrei Krauchanka (BLR), the other co-world leader, is fifth with 2529 points after a 14.29m effort which was a personal best. Krauchanka, like Karpov, got to a slow start, but is also looking for a medal following a couple of successful events.

Donovan Kilmartin (USA) and Mikhail Logvinenko (RUS) were both a bit off their best results in the Shot Put and are in sixth and seventh place having scored 2509p and 2487p respectively. Aleksandr Pogorelov (RUS) called it a day before the Shot Put and will not continue to compete here.

The next event, the High Jump, will be decisive as both Krauchanka and Karpov are good high jumpers and have a possibility to narrow the gap between leader Clay and themselves.

Projected final scores (using season’s best):

Bryan Clay SB 6192 - projected 6279  +87p
Dmitriy Karpov SB 6229 - projected 6204  -25p
Andrei Krauchanka SB 6229 - projected 6169 -60p
Mikhail Logvinenko SB 6129 - projected 6065  -64p
Andres Raja SB 5949 - projected 6028  +79p
Donovan Kilmartin SB 6008 - projected 5971  -37p
Roman Sebrle SB 5892 - projected 5946  +54p
