The surprise of the morning was Panamanian Irving Saladino’s Area record of 8.10m in round-one to qualify by right in what was his first ever indoor competition, and lead more experienced indoor competitors into Saturday’s final.

Last year's World Championships sixth placer, 23-year-old Saladino who equalled his did not have an indoor mark, but rectified that problem with just one jump.

World leader this winter with 8.36, Ignisious Gaisah of Ghana, also went through with one jump, hitting the sand at the qualifying mark of 7.95, and together with Greece’s Louis Tsatoumas, 8.06, made up the three to go through from group A with Saladino. Brian Johnson of the USA, 7.85, and Issam Nima of Algeria, 7.84, also progressed from the same group.

The only qualifier by right from group B was Italy’s Andrew Howe, 8.05, with South Africa’s Godfrey Mokoena on a season’s best 7.89, and Brazil’s Erivaldo Vieira, a personal best 7.88 also going through.

Dane Morten Olsen, fourth longest this winter, failed to make the cut on 7.75, while the former five-time World Indoor and four-time outdoor champion and Olympic gold medallist, Cuba’s Ivan Pedroso, could manage no better than 7.27.
