Men's Triple Jump

FacebookTwitterEmail

After a slow start, Christian Olsson pulled a splendid jump out of the bag with his third round attempt to demolish the competition and win this year’s World Athletics Final Triple Jump competition.

Opening with a competition leading 16.85 in the first round, Olsson was overtaken by Russia’s Danila Burkenya in the second round, when Burkenya, the Olympic bronze medalist, jumped 17.00 metres to Olsson’s second round 16.95.

The Swede’s position started to look shakier still in round three, when, to the delight of the crowd, France’s Karl Taillepierre jumped 17.04 to take the lead for a few seconds, before he was overtaken by Kenta Bell from the USA, who leapt momentarily into the lead with 17.16 metres, only to be overtaken in his turn by Burkenya, who improved his best to 17.20 to snatch back the lead.

But Olsson was not to be outdone. The 24-year-old, who is the only person ever to hold concurrently the Olympic, World outdoor and indoor and European outdoor and indoor title, in addition to clinching a half share of the TDK Golden League jackpot just a week ago, pulled out the stops and leapt to 17.66 metres, for a new competition record and victory. With only Brazil’s Jadel Gregorio able to improve on his earlier performances in the last round, jumping 17.13, Olsson elected not to jump again.
