12 February 2001 – Potchefstroom, South Africa - Agnes Samaria set a Namibian record, while Hedrick Mokganyetsi (400m), Hardus Pienaar, and Alwyn Myburgh (400m hurdles) were a cut above the rest in their events at the ABSA Series meeting in Potchefstroom last night.

Setting the pace in the women’s 800 metres, Tatyana Tereschuk (Ukraine) covered the opening lap in 57 seconds before dropping out after 600 metres. Samaria took the lead at the beginning of the back straight, and powered her way to victory in a time of 2:03.09. Besides maintaining her unbeaten run in the series, Samaria improved on her Namibia record of 2:03.99, which she set in Cologne last year.

"My aim tonight was to run 2:02 as Tatyana set a good pace. It is the first time in the series that l have had someone to push the pace. At least now l am getting closer to my goal of breaking the two-minute barrier. To help improve my speed, l will run a few more 400 metre races," said Samaria.

Accelerating in the second half of the race Mokganyetsi ran the fastest time in the world this year in the 400 metres with a time of 44.90 seconds. Marcus la Grange was runner up in 45.40, while world junior 200 metres champion Paul Gorries was third in a career best of 45.47.

"All l want to do now is to run consistently in the mid 45 seconds in the remaining six races l will run in the domestic season. My next aim is to defend my national title in Durban next month," said Mokganyetsi.

Olympic semi-finalist Myburgh set a career best in the 400 m hurdles with a time of 48.90 seconds. He is well inside Athletics South Africa’s stringent qualifier for the world Championships of 49 seconds.

Enjoying a rich vein of form, Pienaar set a career best with a throw of 80.77 metres on his way to winning the javelin. Britain’s Mark Roberson was second (78.17), ahead of Marius Corbett (75.40).

Shadrack Hoff ended Hendrik Ramaala’s unbeaten run in the 3000 metres in dramatic style. Bursting into a sprint in the last 100 metres, Hoff, overtook Ramaala and won the in 7:57,94 the fastest time by a South African this year. Ramaala was runner up (7:59,93), while Richard Mavuso was third in (8:03,24)

Twenty year old Frenchman David Chaussinand surprised local favourite Chris Harmse and veteran Zsolt Nemeth (Hungary) to win the men’s hammer throw with a 78.80 metres effort. Harmse (76.89) was runner up ahead of Nemeth (76.48)

Mbulaeni Mulaudzi (1:46.96) edged Werner Botha and Botswana’s Olympic finalists Glody Dube in a tactical 800 metre race. Although they clocked an identical time of (1.47.06), Botha was declared the runner up.

Hendrik Louw (Namibia) and Felix Coetzee both tied at 7.87m in the long jump, albeit the Namibian was judged winner. Arnaud Casquette (Mauritius) was placed third with a leap of 7.77m.

Burger Lambrecht won the men’s shot put with a massive throw of 20.53. British long jumper Jo Wise emerged victorious in the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.35 metres. Her compatriot Helen Frost won the 400 metres in 52.90 seconds.
