The World Junior Triple Jump champion Khotso Mokoena set another record on the second and final day of the South Africa Student Sports Union Athletics Championships at the University of Johannesburg (23 April). This time it was a championship mark in the Triple Jump rather than the national record he set yesterday in the Long Jump.

Opting for only one attempt, Mokoena carried the day with a brilliant effort of 17.02m, an improvement on the championship record by 42 centimetres. He later explained why he then packed his bags after only one jump. "The domestic season has been the most demanding of my career and I need to rest before the huge challenges that lie ahead".

"Hopefully our officials can make a plan to enable me compete at the World Athletics Championships (in Helsinki, Finland) and the World Student Games (in Izmir, Turkey) as both events are in August". He went on "With God's grace I will do well in the Long Jump and Triple Jump in both Helsinki and Izmir".

Mokoena's phenomenal performance earned him the Male Field Events Athlete Award after setting the national long jump record of 8.37m. The event's sponsors ABSA Bank have offered him a return air ticket to Izmir.

Van Zyl looking aims at record

Meanwhile Louis van Zyl blew away the field to win the 400m hurdles in 49.35 seconds. Pieter Koekemoer (50.02) and Ockert Cilliers (50.25) where silver and bronze medallists. With fellow South African Alwyn Myburgh having set World Student Games record (48.09) four years ago, Van Zyl explains why he is keen to compete in Izmir after Helsinki. "That record is within my reach. After Helsinki that's my target," he said.  Van Zyl received the Male Track Athlete Award at the SASSU championships.

Julius competes sprint double

Elsewhere the reigning World Student Games 200m champions Leigh Julius retained his national title with a 20.70 effort. Earlier he also retained his 100m title, an event in which he was a silver medallist at the last World Student Games.

Young talents on show...

The championships brought to the fore some very promising talents. The Vaal University of Technology's Charles Janjties stepped out of the shadows of his training partner and Olympic silver medallists Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, winning a slow but tactical 800m in 1:51.74. He beat the reigning World Student Games 1500m champion Johan Pretorius (1:51.94) in the sprint for the finish line.

"For me this was a make or break situation. I am not in the league of Mulaudzi and (Hezekiel) Sepeng and so my focus has been on making the team to the Turkey," says Janjties. He has a 1:46.98 effort to his credit this year.

Perhaps the most exciting athlete of the event was Mapaseka Makhanya, who made her move in the women's 800m in the last 180 metres to win in 2:10.32. She earlier won the 1500m (4:30.4) in a similar style. "There was a strong headwind on the back straight so I tucked myself behind the bigger and taller girls and waited for the last bend to show how races ought to be finished," said Mapaseka.

A 3000m steeplechase semi-finalist at the World Junior Championships last year, she earlier on dropped out of her favourite event. "I collided with another athlete after she suddenly stopped at the water jump. The incident left me with a sore Achilles, so I opted to pull out of the race and concentrate on the 1500m and 800m," she revealed.

Other notable performances came from Delia Visser who set a championships record of 6.41m in the long jump and earned the Female Field Events Award. She was also runner up in the Triple Jump (12.40).

Reuben Ramolefi added the 3000m Steeplechase (9:01.18) title, to his 5000m win. Second in the 5000m, Boy Soke returned to win the 10,000m (30:23.40). In the process Lushapo April (30:40.60) and Thubalethu Phaku (31:08.90) qualified for Turkey.
