Moneghetti aims for 10th World Cross Country Championships

25 January 2001 – Australia’s Steve Moneghetti is aiming for his 10th World Cross Country Championships which this year will be held in Dublin, Ireland from 24-25 March. After contesting his first World Cross Country in 1985, Moneghetti produced his and Australia’s highest ever placing of fourth in 1989.

The selection trials take place tomorrow (Friday 26 January 2001), in Ballarat, Victoria with a men’s race over 8km and women’s race over 6km.

Australia’s men will be vying for selection in the men’s long course (12km), short course (8km) and junior race, while the women will be targeting the long course (8km), short course (4km) and junior race.

In the women’s 6km race, Australia’s leading marathon female runner Kerryn McCann and Ireland’s Olympic silver medallist Sonia O’Sullivan will take on a number of rising stars including 2000 World Junior medallist Georgie Clarke, World junior record holder over 3000m steeplechase Melissa Rollison (QLD), Queensland school’s star Ruth McDonnell and NSW junior talent Eloise Poppett. Former teenage star Suzy Walsham from NSW will also be strong after last week recording 4:12.9 for 1500m, 11 years after running her personal best of 4:11.04.
