The 20th anniversary edition of the ‘Carlsbad 5000’ in Carlsbad, USA, one of the fastest 5km road races in the world will take place on 3 April 2005.

Heading the elite field is last weekend’s double World Cross Country Championship gold medallist, Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia, who sauntered to only the second ever women’s short and long race double in championship history at the Hippodrome de Saint-Galmier. Yet the 19 year-old star who is also the World 5000m track champion is but one of many names from St-Etienne/St-Galmier who will be on show in Carlsbad.

Both of last year’s champions will be returning. On the women's side, Isabella Ochichi of Kenya, the Olympic 5000m champion who was bronze medallist in the short race on Sunday having taken fifth behind Dibaba the day before, clocked 14:53 in Carlsbad in 2004.

In the men’s division Dejene Berhanu of Ethiopia, who is a two-time champion (2003-2004), with a 5km PB of 13:14 also returns having helped bring home two team golds to his country at last weekend’s World Cross thanks to 7th (short) and 6th (long) place finishes.
