The fifth Porto Marathon, which was held this Sunday in this marvellous northern Portuguese city, produced another Kenyan win in the men’s event with the second best ever male Marathon result on Portuguese soil.

Samuel Muturi Mugo produced a personal best of 2:11:08 seconds, improving his previous PB (2:11:15 from the 2008 Tiberias Marathon) by seven seconds.

Mugo was fourth last year in the Cologne Marathon (2:11:27), and in Portugal he left the runner-up, Ethiopian Tesfaye Tola, more than one minute behind (2:12:14). The third place on the podium went to another Ethiopian, Negari Getachew Terfa, with 2:13:19.

The African power prevailed in the top male runners with the Kenyan Robert Kiprotich Cheruiyot –yet another Robert K. Cheruiyot! – finishing in fourth place (2:14:37), with another Kenyan, David Langat, fifth.

The best Portuguese runner, the veteran António Salvador, finished seventh in 2:17:47.

The women’s race was won by Ethiopian Tirfe Tsagaye Beyene, third in last year’s Valencia Marathon, this time running 2:35:31. The Portuguese Fátima Silva was second in 2:46:22.
