1 February 2002 - Free State Athletics Stadium, Bloemfontein, South Africa - A national record in the women’s hammer throw by Elmarie Knoetzen was the highlight of the second ABSA track and field series meeting held at the Free State Athletics Stadium in Bloemfontein on Friday.

Knoetzen entered the record books when with her fifth attempt when she threw the implement to a distance of 59.37 metres. Besides carrying the day in the event, she erased the old record of 58.74 metres which she achieved during the 1999 Johannesburg All Africa Games.

A normally publicity-shy Knoetzen finally came out of her shell. “This comes as a great relief to me. For the past three years l have been struck at 58 metres. Now l feel confident that l can go on and better the Africa record later in the year,” said Knoetzen.

Although her mind appears to be gear towards the 2004 Athens Olympics, Knoetzen has her sights on the Africa record of 62.06 which Caroline Fournier (Mauritius) set in 1996 “I will go to Britain for two years to work more closely with my English coach Allen Bertram. That record will go,” said Knoetzen.

Perhaps the upset of the day was when the youthful Juana Arrendel (Dominican Republic) edged Olympic silver medalists and world champions Hestrie Cloete in the women’s high jump. While both cleared the bar at 1.90 metres. Arrendel who is three centimentres off her national record, carried the day on a count back of failed attempts.

Returning to competition after recovering from a back injury, World Indoor bronze medallist Shaun Bownes had no trouble winning the 110m hurdles in a modest time of 13.66 seconds. Olympic silver medallist Frantz Kruger won the discus (64.41) in his first competition of the year. While Petr Stehlik (Czech Republic) 19.73 won the men shot put with a heave of 19.73 metres.

The Czech Republic’s World Indoor pole vault champion Pavla Hamackova (4.30) won the outdoor version of the event. However, it was her runner up Annalie van Wyk who grabbed attention. The Caope Twon tennagers clears of 4.05 metres was her first over the 4 metre mark

World Student Games champions Alwyn Myburgh maintained his dominance in the 400 metres hurdles with a time of 48.99 seconds. The Czech Republic’s duo of Jiri Muzik (49.48) and Stefan Tesarik (49.75) covered the distance inside 50 seconds.
