Elizna Naude’s Africa Discus Throw record and Tebogo Mashela’s national women's 3000m Steeplechase record were highlights of the Yellow Pages Track and Field meet in Coetzenburg Stadium (2 March).

Six athletes achieved the World Championships qualifiers. Their feats were preceded by a colourful and well attended sub-junior and youth (9-17 years old) competition as well as the first day of the combined events competition.

New Records

Naude sealed her victory with her first throw of 64.87. What’s more she surpassed her previous Africa record of 63.17m set last year.

“I was so excited with my opening throw that I lost concentration and just went through the motions in the subsequent fives throws. This year I believe I can reach 66 metres. Thereafter I hope to be a serious medal contender at the World Championships,” says Naude.”

Elsewhere Tebogo Mashela broke away from her main rival Nolene Conrad after just 1000m and went on to improve her national 3000m steeplechase record with a time of 9:57.17. It was an overwhelming experience for Mashela who has been battling to better her 10.01.14 record for nearly a year.

“I was basically running against the clock. My aim was to cover 2000m in 6:40. When I realised I was five seconds ahead of schedule I know that I would break the tens minute barrier. I hope to run under 9:50 this year,” says Mashela. She received the meet sponsor’s bonus of Rand 30,000 for setting national record.

World Championships qualifiers

Reuben Ramolefi took the led right from the starter’s gun in the men’s 3000m steeplechase. His aggressive attack at the water jump enable him build huge gap, winning the race in 8:20.18. He bettered his best of 8:20.72 set at the Rome Golden league meeting last year.

“After running 8:39 in Ekhlurleni (the provincial championships) at altitude last week, I was confident of running faster here close to sea level. My next goal is to better the national record (8:19),” says Ramolefi.

Meanwhile back from his campaign on the European indoor circuit, sprinter Morne Nagel clocked 20.59 in the 200m to qualify for the World championships. Earlier on he had won the 100m (10.39).

World Junior Javelin Champion Robert Oosthuizen (81.46m) also qualified for Osaka. “I do not want to put myself under pressure talking about medals. What I hope to achieve is my career best with a throw of over 84 metres,” said Oosthuizen.

Africa women’s Javelin champion Justin Robbeson (62.12) and 400m hurdler Alwyn Myburgh (49.20) who previously qualified for Osaka also prevailed in their respective disciplines.

Notable Performances

Shot putter Janus Robberts (19.21) and Slovenian hammer thrower Libor Charfreitag (74.89) (73.55) were comfortable winners. Victorious Namibians Agnes Samaria (1500m) and Stephan Louw (long jump) are making a comeback after injuries that kept them out of action for at least a year. Samaria’s time of 4:12.63 is a career best, while Louw with 7.57m won with a modest effort.
