Oceania High Performance Training Centre selected

FacebookTwitterEmail

The IAAF has selected the Millennium Institute for Sport and Health in Auckland, New Zealand, as the venue for the new High Performance Training Centre (HPTC), which is to be established for the Oceania Area.

After an exhaustive assessment of potential venues for the HPTC, the IAAF chose the Millennium Institute from a short-list of four excellent venues located throughout Australia and New Zealand.

The first IAAF HPTC was opened in 1997. Since that date the IAAF has opened other centres in several Areas throughout the world: Africa, Asia, South America and Europe. Many athletes have benefited from these centres and have improved their performances at world level. Among them have been medal winners and many finalists at international competitions. Now it is Oceania’s turn to take advantage of this great opportunity to provide long term residential training programs for gifted young athletes in this region.

Initially, through an agreement between the IAAF and the IOC, five scholarships each of five year’s duration, will be offered to outstanding young athletes to prepare them to compete with distinction at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The IAAF will now look to appoint a Director to manage the Oceania HPTC programme in Auckland.

On behalf of the Oceania Athletics Family, I would like to extend to the IAAF our sincere thanks for providing the funding and assistance that has made it possible for us to establish this wonderful programme in our Area. We all look forward to the appointment of the HPTC Director and inauguration of the Centre in the next couple of months.

Bill Bailey
