Only athletics is such a universal sport

20 October 2000No other organisation in the world has so many member countries as athletics - the IAAF boast 210 Member Federations. Medals and finalists in the latest editions of the Olympic Games, World Championships, World Indoors and World Junior Championships are shared among more and more countries.

This trend has reached a climax here in Santiago, where the current edition of the World Junior Championships in Athletics is in the process of establishing a kind of "world record".

After the end of three days of competition, with 15 finals contested, gold medals have been conquered by 14 countries (Germany – the only country with two golds, Russia, Jamaica, Kenya, Spain, South Africa, Croatia, Sweden, Turkey, Great Britain & Northern Ireland, Netherlands, India, Mexico and Uganda).

Medals have been awarded so far to 26 countries and 45 have placed athletes in the final (ranks 1 to 8).
